Do you really need that?

E-mail Print PDF

Most of the people I know, when they need to do something with a computer, they always use the most fully featured software they can get.

I've just redesigned my logo, and a friend of mine was surprised I've didn't use Photoshop to make it.

Actually the logo was really a simple work done with Inkskape and Gimp (those are both two really feature-filled software BTW) there was no reason to use another software, I'm sure that Photoshop is much better than Gimp but there is no reason for me to use it, I'm not a graphic designer or a professional photographer the features of gimp are just enough for me and I'm used to it's interface,

I think that there are time for a spreadsheet and time for just a calculator and there are people that just will never need the first one.

Just look around and try to understand what you really need.

It's strange how things are so easy to do but need a so complex procedure by our brain.

Moving the mouse is something natural for most regular computer users, but actually need some complex "feedback driven" structure in our brain.

The koala hates me

All kubuntu releases since 8.10 don't like my laptop (hp 2710p), seems that kdm doesn't behave well with my graphic card. I never had all this problem with my previous laptop, but that had a NVidia graphic card, while this one have an intel graphic card (this shows that open source drivers doesn't automatically means better drivers).

Anyway this is a serious issue for me, cause linux is my only os on my laptop and my actual kubuntu is reaching it's end of life. Let's hope to have an happy ending.

Another historical piece of internet is dieing.

E-mail Print PDF

As you may know Geocities is closing.

Back in 1996 Geocities was "the free host" even one of my first website was hosteb by Geocities. At that time yahoo and altavista were the "two search engine giants". The first was a "selected source" of websites (like a sort of yellow pages), it was not so easy to be accepted into their database, while the second was an "everything is good" search engine.

I'm pretty nostalgic of that period, internet was a place for many but not for all, and it was felt like a "serious place" were everyone was an equal. Today internet is much different, it is mostly a giant mall full of entertainment. And they are trying so change it more, making some sort of "cable tv" canceling the net neutrality, removing the freedom and equality of its inhabitants.

I don't know what the future will bring, I'm just sad of what we've lost.

3D Displays, will they arrive?

E-mail Print PDF

Some days ago youtube suggested me this video:

Embed Embed this video on your site

I must admit that I was always interested by 3d displays and holography and an announcement of sharp in 2004 made me ho to finally have the possibility to see 3d "coming out" of my monitor . And I was surprised that, till now, even thoug there are a lot of technologies that would enable such a feature nothing had really come out.

So I wonder why, do they all have a poor image quality, or there is just no interest in such tecnology?
